Description

FLUFF, YAY!(warning, long textwall):

Kombat-Unit

Former status: Savlar Chemdog private.
Current status: Traitor. Blood Pact private.

Real name: Unknown.
Age: Unknown. Appears to be between 20-30 years. No birth registry information.
Allegiance: Chaos militant renegades known as the Blood Pact, regiment of Magister Qux of the Eyeless.
Threat level: low/moderate.

Bio: As common with Savlar dead moon dwellers, the past of this man is a clear slate. It’s most likely that he had been a Hive-world scum, picked up at a young age for some crime off the streets and thrown into the poisonous mines along with thousands others like him.
Recruits from one of the numerous prisons on the penal world where formed into a small regiment and thrown into the turmoil of the Sabbat Worlds to fight with the scattered Chaos warbands. Being urban combat specialists, the regiment had been ordered to clean out a small Hive on a fringe of a war-torn planet the Chaos tried to get a foothold on.
The regiment immediately took heavy losses upon encountering a massive Blood Pact force that had assaulted the lower levels and sewers of the Hive. The Chem Dogs never had a fame of pious, brave warriors, and being caught in the scissors of heavily armed enemies, the moral of the squads grew thin as the effects and supplies of combat stimulants began running out. Many deserters have been shoot down, but a final riot had broken down the Commissars combined defense, and the remnants of the regiment, four full squads, took a run for their lives. Some tried to escape among and flee individually, mixing with the remains of the citizens, while others, a far lesser amount, fueled by the promises and opportunities the Pact offered, turned in to their former enemy, swearing a new allegiance. Kombat-unit was among the latter.
For the Chem Dogs, it wasn’t a heart-breaking, heavy choice, and KU understood it. One had been death, or in case of victory – a return to the horrid world and toxic mines of Savlar moons. More so, suicides for the "greater good" were more than welcome in the penal legions. – So he decided to continue serving as a soldier, but without the prospect of a Commisar more than eager to blow your brains out at the slightest chance.
Seeing the Pact in combat, KU, who had become a soldier unwillingly, got fascinated with a previously unseen by him combat doctrine that while being bent on harsh discipline, allowed the privates to aspire to their own goals. Combined with a deep loathing for the Imperium that turned his life into hell, swearing allegiance to the Pact was the most sincere thing this man had ever done.
To the throne of Urlock Gaur, during the initiation, he, like other Savlar traitors, brought the severed heads of those Imperial citizens and arbiters he first came to defend.

After that, he managed to survive through numerous battles Magister Qux had led his army in. In the later years, the situation in the Cabal Systems had not been the best for Chaos forces, after the crusade, the bulk of Gaur’s forces become splintered apart, and the Pacts activity ceased to blitzkrieg, terrorist assaults. KU had been fit for such kind of fighting more or less well.
The criminal nature of a “dead dog” allowed him to integrate into the Pact very fast, creating alliances with the older, veteran soldiers.

KU serves as an infiltrator. Being physically inept (compared to the Blood Pact standard) due to the damage taken on the chemical mines, he is often being put in squads designated for covert missions, hit and run operations and terrorist attacks, mostly in trench zones behind the enemy lines. The commandment and sergeants know that he’s no berserker, marksman or blademaster, and therefore, no use on the frontline or the midst of battle, so such people are organized in platoons specifically designated for diversion attacks and such.
Probably, this nature of his specialty, allowed him to survive through the war.

Character: Kombat-unit is no deep nature. The only strange, inappropriate characteristic he gained throught the decades of war, was an unusual for a former criminal and scumbag, idealism. Whether he got steadily brainwashed, or really found some inner comfort in the teachings of the Pact and it’s official doctrine is unknown, but the fact remains – he became a zealous follower of Khorne. Surprisingly, the Pacts training managed to burn out his innate hatred of authority and his slackness, turning a highly individualistic man to a person able to think about not only himself, but others too.
KU is cruel and this cruelty is very mundane and unimaginative in nature, he even most of the time doesn’t realize it. Killing children and women is a common thing for him, especially when he gets another fit of his abstinent syndrome. He merely supposes, that war is war, and everyone who goes against the Pact and Archon, need to be murdered. The act of suppression of resistance is a thing that most pleases him. At the same time, it would be wrong to say that this private is a grim, soulless killer, focused only on sowing death on the battlefield. Kombat-unit is a highly sociable person, always ready to chat, brag, tell stories or help someone out – if that “someone” is worth it. His manners, though rude and straightforward, speak of a balanced, humorous character. In the Pact, he’d found people that are alike him, and it gives his life a purpose. Kombat-unit has probably never had a home, so his short life has been composed solely out of hard, penal work and war. Even though during the decades of war, he saw numerous of his friends and comrades die, even though he realized that he's got only a maximum of 10-15 years to live, and in that time the war won't end nor victory will be achieved, he still, somewhere deep, hopes that maybe he'll live to a time when he'll have his own safe place from which there will be no need to run away or retreat.
The other issue is his stance on the Imperium. The recent punishment, carried by the sirdar on his account and resulting in his lasgun taken away, was carried on the account of him murdering a captive Imperial Guard sergeant during the interrogation. Well remembering his “service” as a Savlar Dog and the mines, KU sees every imperial as his personal, bloodsworn enemy, and this hate blinds him from making any rational decisions or actions. Which in all other cases is uncommon, since he’s quite a rational, calculative and cold (when dealing with serious issues) person, who’s able to put his emotions behind him.
Used to exploit nitro-chem stimulants, Kombat-unit found himself short of such combat drugs in the Qux’s army. KUs morals and fighting spirit had always been depended on these chemicals, so he still sometimes has hard times substituting the drugs with adrenaline. This also causes sporadic fits of abstinence, that may cause either temporary depression or unmotivated violence.
Other traits: sly, communicative, active, outgoing. Can form friendship bonds. Idealistic and merciless. Doesn’t like to be alone. Rational. Somewhat cowardly. Disciplined, but allows himself to step over rules. Can't stand having his back uncovered. Ethics sway depending on whom he’s dealing with. Doesn’t like acting in the open, that’s why is fit as a terrorist. Has a fear of Astartes, after seeing them in battle, up to the moment that he refuses to leave trench/bunker/refuge if there is a danger of running in them.

Appearance: Rather short. Has an asthenic, wiry build. Right eye and left ear augmented after an injury. Jugular vein augmented after an injury. Wears a mohawk, that bleaches white. Usually never seen in a helmet, as in remembrance of the Savlar tradition. His grotesque is made on the base of his old chem.-rebreather. Facial features are quite ordinary, though slightly gaunt, usually somewhat tense or snarled, however, it’s not uncommon to see him grinning. Eyes are a washed-out dull grey color, when in abstinence faze are sunken in and bloodshot. Wears standard Urdeshi Pattern armor with integrated backpack. The icon stand usually bears one or two recent trophies.

Psyker abilities: None.

Battle tactics and weaponry: Kombat-Unit works well with small arms, as due to his physical state he can’t operate anything heavier than a lasgun.
Primary offensive: Laspistol, scavenged off a dead Comissar. (Lasgun has been taken from him as a form of punishment)
Secondary offensive: Hiveworl-fashioned chainknife. His favorite weapons he masters the best.
Specific: None.
Close-combat: double-edged boot knife.
Mid-range: crack grenades, smoke grenades.

Kombat-unit’s tactics are based on his concern for own safety. He’s not a hot-head, so he won’t ruch straightforward at the enemy, knowing his abilities. If it’s possible, he’ll try to take them out from distance, if not – he’ll go into close-combat. Being confident, but not brilliant, with both the chain-knife and laspistol, he prefers to take out his enemy by surprise, often using grenades to stun and injure his opponents, and then kill them when they are somewhat helpless. He also uses smoke grenades, which, with his enhanced vision allows him to approach the enemies in such a hostile environment. And, when close-combat is eminent, he’ll rely on his speed and agility, not strength.
But, KU is not an assassin or a melee fighter, his primary job is help in mining and communications.

Urdeshi Pattern Blood Pact armor, known as “Carnage MkI”

When Archons forces overtook the Urdesh Forgeworl, it became evident, that this is a perfect opportunity to get all the supplies needed for the Blood Pact to continue it’s expansion across the Sabbat Worlds.
Among other things, it has been ordered for a standardized armor scheme to be realeased and manufactured for the new recruits and veterans alike.
Since most of the Pact consisted of various traitor guard regiments, PDF and Arbiter forces, the appearance of each infantry unit had been unique and ragged, which didn’t allow to implement a sense of a unified regular army which the Pact needed so much. Each regiment, squad, platoon, looked barbaric and ragged –a case that didn’t improve morale or communication.

Thus, the Urdeshi Pattern armor had been released and implemented as an armor standard for all Blood Pact forces across the system.

Being done in haste, the “Carnage MkI” is slightly inferior to the Imperial counterpart, like the Cadian or Steel Legion armors. However, it still proved better that the various scavenged armors the Pact used before the implementation of the Urdeshi armor, and being more lightweight, it gave additional mobility.

The body armor is a 3-layered segmented vest with an integrated rigid carcass backpack and a filtering system that allows conjunction with rebreathers and gasmasks.
The upper layer, is an alloy carapace, that is loosely connected to the second layer – a ceramite “dragon-scale chainmail” of a sort. The loose connection allows to lay wiring between the two, for heating and cooling systems and additional electronic systems. The third, closest to the body layer, is 2 kevlar layers firmly connected to the ceramite plates – the Kevlar absorbs the impact from the bullet shots, while ceramite takes on las-rounds. It also transfers the heat from the heater systems and allows air to ventilate through the steel.
On the front, in the chest, there are two grills for vents.

The shoulderpads are done pretty much the same, only without the Kevlar layer. They provide good defense of the shoulders and shoulder joint area, as well as the high side plates and spikes defend the neck and face of the soldier.
Knee and thigh pads are done based on the same technology. Crude blades are often screwed onto them by soldiers in case of close combat fight.

The integrated backpack has room enough to store a small food supply, groutesqe, ammo and the thigh protector plates. It also allows the icon grills to be screwed firmly to it, or taken off when not needed.

This armor, adorned with Khorne symbols and the Eightfold path arrows, became quite populr among the Pact. Even after the Urdesh Forgeworld was “liberated”, the design had not been lost, and the manufacturing had been taken to other available facilities. Of course, this created a diversity of the designs based on “Carnage MkI”, so it’s not unusual to see now Blood Pact soldiers who wear the altered armor designs, which only slightly resemble the original.

Yay, I did it.

The main reasons I'm doing this is:

1) to eventually flesh my char and know how to draw him
2) to present an original and STANDARTIZED Blood Pact armor pattern
3) To train doing game concept design.

Here you can see:
-3/4 view
-3/4 color ref
- head in grotesque rebreather
- helmet
- right shoulderpad + optional trophy decoration
- laspistol
- chainknife
- bootknife

I'm very proud with this unified design, it looks warhammery, but not "chaosized" Cadian armor. This is an original produt of Urdesh Forgeworld and a standard for Blood Pact troops. Plus, I've managed to pool off a good game-design reference as I planned - this will go to my portfolio))

The thigh protectors are optional.

I've decided to keep the lineart, since it came out good, and whilst I ruined it with the coloring, it gives more detail on the armor.
Also, for those who want to say that the skull on the icon stand is too small - it's a children's skull%)

PS: WHILE KOMBAT-UNIT IS (C) TO ME, THIS LINEWORK AND THE CONCEPT AS A WHOLE IS FREE TO USE AS A MODEL FOR 3D WORKS, ILLUSTRATIONS FOR FANSITES, AS BASES FOR MINIATURE CONVERSION OR SUCH. IT'S NOT ONLY PERMITTED, BUT ENCOURAGED, AS LONG AS YOU LINK TO ME AS THE CREATOR
