Stroggy by TD-Vice Stroggy by TD-Vice
So, this is my third ever Zbrush sculpting attempt, and being the retard I am, I jumped straight into doing what Zbrush isn't meant for and what is considered to be "hard" - hard surfaces.

Pretty happy how it turned out - still don't know how to make Zbrush work in higher resolutions, all my projects turn out to be around 1800 pix, which aint cool

Zbrush can do hard surfaces just fine, especially with HPolish,Spolish and Planar brushes, and now Panel Loops and Edge Loops.

For exporting a high-resolution image, you'll need to turn on Pro in the Document Pane and resize the Width and Height of the Canvas.

Use the scale tool to zoom in and out and edit things. When you're done use the render tool for output file in desired resolution. That's all you need for now =)

Looks good. For the third ever attempt it looks great even. The hard edges - what essentially makes a hard surface - look good so far, you only need to sharpen them further (there are specialized brushes for that in the standard selection) and to deepen the cavities, the lighting on the jaw joints looks a bit off because they are not yet fully 3-dimensional.

I've long since been impressed by your ability to perpetually demand more and more from yourself in case of artistic development - a trait not commonly found among dA artists. May not yet be a masterpiece but still a fav for a fine attempt, especially if it's only third ever as you say. Keep up the good work!

That's pretty stunning, especially if that's not what the program's really meant for. There's a lot of detail in this, and I love the idea of the contrast between the real mouth and the hard metallic exterior

More look like an alien or something. Stroggs got to have more in common with humans, as generally they are humans, just hard-modded.

Pretty damned good for a third crack at zbrush. I guess my main criticisms would be that it's clear that you carved out a lot of the little indentations and divots by hand, which makes the model look like a clay sculpture, rather than a real, solid biomechanical monster thing (it's especially noticeable on the three impressions on that disk that juts out of the creature's temple, they look asymmetrical in size and placement).

I'd recommend making a bunch of custom alphas in photoshop (or just downloading a bunch of pre-made ones, like these: [link] [link] ), and then using the drag stroke. It'll make your mechanical models look a thousand times cleaner and more precise.

funny,i've reinstalled Quake 4 last night, had a slight nostalgia for the Strogg mechs
You should try Sculptris, its a free version of ZBrush, its also lighter so you can rough up a shape at first, then send the file to ZB and work on it in higher detail.
Might save you some time instead if nitpicking around with a heavy program

Wonderful eyeless abomination with craggy bitey teeth. The hard surfaces look swell, actually.

That's pretty goddamn awesome is what it is. Lower than intended resolution and some shaky lines nonetheless, what's there is fucking nice, makes me want to try this thing.

Not bad detail. I really recommend looking into the Dynamesh tools, it basically can give your sculpt new topology instantly so that you can sculpt detail without worrying about polys that much.

That is some intense detailing. At least diving into the deep-end gives you at least some inkling on how good you will be. Now you just need to practice.
