Ildi the Scout by TD-Vice Ildi the Scout by TD-Vice
A concept sketch of my and :iconwalkingmaelstrom:'s character from the story, Chaos Scout Ildi. He's a pure Alpha Legion Astartes, meaning that he's not a convert from a loyalist or other renegade chapter, but initiated directly into Alpha Legion, before going full Slaanesh and joining Torturer's warband.

He's modeled to have a russian OMON/spetsnaz feel, which is a deviation from the traditional concept, and I feel, a very lucky one. Ildi's a sniper, and uses an unknown to the Imperial forces Dragon Pattern sniper rifle.

For a Chaos Marine, Ildi's rather "clean", being an Alpha Legion neophyte, and has quite an unusual personal outlook on his role and faith. Basically, he's an overtly optimistic Chaos Marine - he manages to observe all the horror that he and his enemies do without much groveling, and thinks it's all neccessary and for the better, believing that true freedom is unattainable without wading through some guts and putting others through hell.
Ildi' s the kind of a bright-eyed fanatic that convinced himseld that he's doing the right thing and finds joy of life in doing it. Considers Razorwire his brother and Torturer a messianic figure that would lead them and others to a better world.

Overall, a "nice" guy among the bunch. The kind that DOES save little girls and damsels in distress - but only if they're witches and stuff.

So, what can I say? Hrm, I agree with the crits that have been levelled at it, mostly. It's a breath of fresh air to find a Chaos follower who is optimistic, almost na´ve, in all the grimdark and not just all "I must kill shit or the Gods will not be happeh!". Because most of Torturer's band don't strike me as overly happy people (Zekkel notwithstanding, but he's possessed).

Though, I've got to ask: how many implants left until he's a fullyfledged Astartes? And when (and if that happens, as Malexis is not the most skilled of apothecaries ;) ) that happens, will he get a full suit of power armour? Maybe he'll prefer to run around as a scout after all that time. What do I know? Always fun speculating. Let's hope he's spared the more quirky ideas that pop into Malexis' head. He seems a nice boy. :meow:

Well, most of Torturer's band isn't emo either, they're more like, cynical? And Ildi here is too young and naive to get cynicism. But the primary idea here is that unlike most of the others from the warband who are converted loyalists and having a lots of darker experience with the Imperium which leads to their more twisted outlooks, Ildi is a pure Chaos Marine, that's been indoctrinated since birth, and so he has a whole different mindset, more idealistic so to say.

Implants? Not much. Probably he'd be just a tactical marine or indeed, remain a scout for some longer time)

I think it put it the wrong way. I was trying to get across that Ildi doesn't strike me as fanatically loyal to the Dark Gods, as say Zekkel. I guess that's his Alpha Legion "upbringing" showing through. And not having had the Imperium's edicts rubbed in your face helps too. Either way, I like the concept of him.

He'd make an excellent Havoc ;) Them shooting skills. Also, good rivalry between him and Razorwire could spring from that.

Actually there wouldn't really be a rivalry. Since I introduced Ildi in the earlier chapters and after fleshing out his characters some more with TD, he actually looks up to Razorwire a lot. While Torturer and Rakkes are mentors, Razorwire is the quintessential sibling, the "elder brother" as Ildi himself calls him since they're both of the Alpha Legion. The Havoc of course hates being called that and threatens him repeatedly for his naivete.

Well, considering most CSM are pretty hatefilled things and Ildi lacks some of the same intensity in his hate, I can sort of see how that happens. The "adorkable" grin in the picture doesn't help, tbh.

I think it's also more how he acts. The dynamics between him and Razorwire are proof positive, and to a lesser extent how his mentor Rakkes speaks with him.

But yeah...adorkable grin is dorkable. Ildi will be showing up later I can guarantee you that.

This is probably one of the best characters I've seen you develop; his nice-guy attitude and personal outlook might be typically atypical, but most people would tend to make this character a derp, wereas you've not done so.

Needless to say, the artwork is brilliant, and it's great to see a Chaos character that's more streamlined, since the 'evil baroque on steroids' can get a little tiring sometimes.

Awesome to hear this from you, man, really flattering. Yeah, I did go for the opposite of your run-of-the-mill official GW Chaos Marine, but actually it makes sense. Why be all droopy and gloomy when being a free murderous pervert and martial artist is so much better, especially with friends?)

Yep. Plus I'm all tired of seeing everyone doing fucking Soviet Marines or Guard in stupid hats and whatnot, so I went for a modern russian feel which I personally am more accustomed with and like.

No problem, it's refreshing to see something individual. And it does indeed seem that so many GW character take everything too seriously, except the orks of course.

I have to say though, that I do somewhat like the 'sci-fi Soviet' aesthetic, even if it is overdone. :p

Different exploration from the usual character type for you I think. The details that can be picked out of his uniform are entertaining - and all very realistic in a wartime situation (ie: medical bag, blade at the ready, head-lamp, face-mask, knee-guards, etc. etc.) Finally: a very grand design to your weaponry.

Regardless, great character concept, it's something you don't see so often with chaos, it's typically "maim kill burn", and all that nonsense.

Cool concept. I guess we will see him in the action soon enough =) I like your SVD 40k incarnation, also you got me a bit confused with this phrase - 'The kind that DOES save little girls and damsels in distress - but only if they're witches and stuff.' - do you mean Eldar/dark Eldar and other xenos or simply fellow chaos followers?

I like this character a lot, a welcome break from the KILL MAIM BURN of his peers and what seems a very Russian attitude concerning military service with a pinch of chaos.
My only critic on the image would be that he seems a little stiff, he seems like the kinda guy that would relax aaaand maybe check out the dimensions on the SM scout models so he looks just a little less like a guardsman.

Additionally, would this Dragon Pattern rifle be a dark Mechanicum creation or just old/forgotten tech?
