Dead hands know no mercy by TD-Vice Dead hands know no mercy by TD-Vice
This is sort of an unorthodox dedication to 9th of May and my country in general.

Whils being patriotic, I'm not at all hurray-patriotic. I love Russia not for the golden filligree of her culture and shit. No. I love my country for all the things the western - and eastern - cultures deem us the epitome of evil.

Knowing english and using internet allows one to gather a big massive of opinions, and I do know how the western media and history portrays my country and my people. It's funny in a sense that we russians are unlucky to be lilly-white.
Hating on non-whites for their culture or life-style is deemed bad and racist. Hating on yourself is absurd. So Russia had become this salvating island where the tabooes doesn't work. We're white, and therefore guilty of all that the other whites try to wash off.
Occupation, repression, genocide.

This major misunderstanind in the midst of the western civilization, at least it's modern variant, possibly lies in the fact - and this is what I depicted - that we're a warrior nation. Our history is a string of wars, fight for survival, betrayals and not very successful attempts at building a peaceful, if opportunistic society in the veing of western european ones. That's why we were usually late to the happy tiems - when western europeans had their civilized inner conflicts and regulated war, we were dying and fighting - with and by the hands of enemies outer and inner.
Perhaps it's the reason why we suck at helping ourselves at times of peace but unite when war is about.

That's the paradox of the national character.

Who ever comes here - dies here. It's a burial ground, in the end.

So I illustrated that. If we're deemed the ultimate evil on Earth - we might well be it. No matter how much time Russia would be declared broken apart, it's population dying out, it's defenses shut down - we'll rise again. It happened many, many times.
Not like a phoenix, none of that romantical crap. Rise like a fucking zombie to lay waste to whoever thinks that they've won and overcome us.

Only we had created the Dead Hand, the automatized system of nuclear revenge strike, that would obliterate the enemy even if the whole country becomes a lifeless wasteland. If there's no one alive here - the dead will fight and ensure that we'll be avenged.

That's what I salute to - to our russian inability to be merciful both to our foes and to ourselves.

That's the driving spirit. I'm proud of my country's history and I'm proud to live in what is considered to be a corrupted hellhole. Because in the end, it's a challenge.
And challenges make worthy people.

For vision the maximum. Because, damnit, your words and your paintings seem to express my emotions better than I ever could. Also, impact.

I love how the corpses on the right look medieval, and the ones on the left look modern. Truly shows the timelessness of war.

As for the originality, you don't step out of your comfort zone, so 3 stars there. But at least you made your own style and comfort zone.
Technique is excellent, as always. Only anatomical flaws I notice are the hand holding the gun (seems like the forearm)is smaller than the rest of the arm).
And the dead guy getting dragged is in an odd position.
Looks like his legs should switch positions.

The skull in the explosion looks weird, but still WICKED, MAAN. The left explosion-hand is twisty as well.

Absence of the blue hue is visible here... Only thing blue-ish is the white area behind the soldier.

Ohh, and the perspective. Background and foreground don't seem to be in sync. The background has the fish eye perspective, while foreground has the simple one point perspective. Maybe bringing the corpses forward and putting them in fish-eye perspective as well would work.

Hope I helped, I'm too sleepy to be more thorough.

Wow, I am absolutely blown away. This has got to be one of my new favourites from your gallery. The composition is simple and striking, and the colour scheme is clearly well chosen, greens and reds.
I'm not sure whether the piece is meant to be viewed from top to bottom or vice versa, but the focal point is definately that big cloud, what a gargantuant.
I'm not sure what the giant rings represent, I think they detract from the realism that is truly terrifying. The perspective, particularly of the trees, is really disorientating, well done on that part.
The rivers of blood really frame the piece, I love the symmetry going on here.
As for technicalities, I'd point out that the hand holding the gun looks odd being fully wrapped around it, as if the metal is recessed under his hand. If the gun is a chunky piece of equipment, maybe his fingers and thumb should barely meet. This is only a thought because I don't have an assault rifle to hand to back that up ;).
As for symbolism, I think I am right in saying that the dead soldiers are foreign military from a variety of different wars strewn throughout history. The sickle is a good touch, even without its hammer counterpart.
I get the feeling that this is an unorthodox victory for the Russian soldier; he looks as if he has achieved victory through death, and has been resurrected, I gather, with what can only be described as a halo. The giant mushroom cloud can only spell death for all, but in the end he will rise again.
I'd love to see it in more detail, but it is a truly remarkable piece, with a good healthy description to match.

Oh, and fantastic job on this piece, and just ruining all the soldiers from the historical lineup.

My mistake, I thought you were Norwegian. I myself am American, and I I hear you there, I hear a lot of false hatred for Russians, but I got a lot of respect for the Russian people. Russia is a cold, hard land, and the only thing colder is the Russian people. The Russian people are hard, tough, durable and are no strangers to suffering. Centuries of hardship and turmoil, war, plague, pain and suffering, has forged the Russian people into some of the toughest, hardest bastards on the planet.

But, among all that, I have met or atleast spoken to many wonderful Russians, most of whom are highly intelligent, learned, and incredibly talented people. Sure, Russia may have it's problems and down sides, but hell, who doesn't? Just letting you know man, I got a lot of respect for your people, got to be some of the toughest people on the planet.

The art is great but the text is a little lacking. It seems like you're just as much a victim of stereotypes as the westerners you talk about. Yeah-Russia got vilified and still gets vilified by some but a lot of people (especially younger people) know better. That and I'm an American who grew up hating Reagan and watching as Gorbachev helped encourage peace through perestroika. I won't say I'm an expert but I do think it's unfortunate that this just seems like more 'us vs them' propaganda.

There was a time when a little girl from the USA wrote a letter to a Russian general who invited her to come visit. She went to Russia and ended up bridging the gap between our nations-at least for a little while. When she was tragically killed some years later some of the communities she'd visited built statues in her honor. It pains me to know few here in the USA followed suit. Maybe you're right to feel the way you do. I just wish it didn't have to be so. I wish we could all live in peace and not have a reason to paint stuff like this.

First off before I say anything I have to say this picture is awesome the epitome of bad-ass I love it !

Really? Usually when I hear the words Western, Eastern, and Ultimate/Epitome of Evil, there usually synonymous with The U.S. since we're pretty much blamed for everything we did, may have done, and didn't do.

Guess this is what makes Vietnam and Russia best buds: Their inability to cast away their beastial instinct and how well they're hide it within the masks of civility.

Yeah, but unlike Vietnam, that never stopped us from being one of the most advanced nations.

Bantirat Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
excuse me, but most times i hear people mentioning russia, they set it into the context of outdated technology/ low quality like those matrosov train-breaks that are pretty much outdated.
As well as the weapon technology, seeing the old AK design beeing still most likely unchanged since its invention (if im not mistaken), not to forget the old t34 tank design back then in the second worl war that was pretty unrelieable and deadly for the crew (even though most tanks were a death trap if attacked properly).

Also, I havent heard of any bigger inventions made by russia, even though russia prove itself mighty in times of pressure and competition like the rush for bringing the first person to the moon or the nuclear arms race.

you're free to correct me
TD-Vice Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
You probably never heard of a lot of shit.

I ain't gonna explain shit, you have internet for it. I'll just leave this thing here - we're one of the few nations that builds nuclear plants around the world, not only in Russia, but actually exporting the technology.

I haven't heard of any "major inventions" rolling out of other places either, USA or Japan. It's just tinkering with shit established in the 70s, computer and communication tech included. Doesn't mean that there ain't any, tho. Oh, T-34. Niiiice. Strange you brought that up, and not the PAK-FA or Berkut planes for example.

Prft. Weak pussy ass shit, try harder.
Bantirat Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
awesome, so you took that as a try to insult your patriotism? well, that wasnt my intention, i wanted to clear out what people think and told me and probably prove myself not to be a fucking pseudo Tr0llz00r liberal or something, but if you take everything as a try to provoke you.... its worthless to take this any further
TD-Vice Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Because such a level of uninformedness about the current state of world affairs is incomprehensible to me.

So of course I take it as deliberate provocation.
Bantirat Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
hmmm, well
sounds reasonable though
also i've got to point out (if it wasnt clear) that iam honestly not very well informed and that what i've been saying is that the view of an average guy from middle europe.

Most of them cant even tell differences between states in eastern europe and only know archtypes like "all people from poland are thiefes" and several jokes and phrases based around it.
So are russian imigrants only known for old cleaner/prostitutes or skinheaded brutes that rarely speak proper german and are more often found drunk then at work.
(But i just guess thats the point of imigrants in most countries)

So do people think of russia beeing generally underdeveloped.

also, i think one of the reasons why people think of russia that way might be 1.)people just think like this and 2.) russia's "closed party" policy, and by that i mean that i rarely hear of russia spreading their shit by throwing every information into the fan like the USA for the sheer sake of posing their inflated ego in front of the world. last thing i heard about russia was the support of india via weapon shipment which doesnt sound like something anybody would celebrate on the street with champagne bottles in their hands, roaring in joy.
TD-Vice Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Considering that most people in "middle europe" are turks, africans and arabs, I can see why that happens.

I have nothing to say to you. Watch Russia Today, educate yourself even a bit.

I love the artwork, that's for sure.

I don't want to go all sappy, or try to kiss up, or whatever, because I don't think this deserves that kind of crap, so I'll just be blunt.

I will say first and foremost that even though I am an American, I do admire Russia more than my own country for the reasons you describe. I walk through the culture and people of my nation today, and I just don't see what I see in your own. Yes, Western Media portrays Russia as evil, but I suppose I'll be one of many to say we blow it out of proportions and cross too many lines. We demonize what we fear, or hate, or are just plain jealous of in some respects.

Your work gives me pause, fellow artist, for you speak the truth. Maybe that's why I enjoy Russia in all of its grimness that made it great; a nation of warriors. An endless, unbreakable will that never gives up, even when it should've been snuffed out long ago. For that, I see it as even stronger than the corporate-run laziness I've come to see of the United States.

I commend you for this work, sir. Your words and work is an inspiration to many.

I think the whole red-scare is a bitch and marks the US as a horrible country too. I'm not a patriot at all of the US. Personally, Russia is like America's best bud that likes to compete against him/her(don't know if the US is feminine or masculine) in a friendly manner, but the citizens of the country take it WAY too far.

I just noticed the details. Left to right: Teutonic Knight, Mongol/Tatar horde, Grande Armee, Wehrmacht solder, Chechen insurgent(?), U.S. Soldier.

I'd think the Mongol guy would be before the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to fit in with the chronological order.
